The B12 vitamin is part of the Vitamin B family and is essential in maintaining a healthy body. Vitamin B12 also known as Cobalamin, is needed for the body to convert carbohydrates, fats and proteins from food into energy. More importantly B12 helps keep the red blood cells healthy aiding in the prevention of heart disease as well as keeping the immune system functioning at its maximum level. Vitamin B12 is also used to create the protective covering of all nerve cells in the body.
One of the most important functions of vitamin B12 is its ability to help form healthy red blood cells, in fact all cells need vitamin B12 in order to keep them healthy. White blood cells, among others need vitaminB12 to help ensure that the immune system is functioning at an optimum level. Every nerve cell in the body needs vitamin B12 in order to form their protective fatty layers, an essential process for all of the nerves, especially those found in the brain. If there is not a sufficient amount of vitamin B12 in your system to create this protective layer then your brain will not be functioning at it’s peak.
It’s interesting how the amount of vitamin B12 that the body actually needs is relatively small however it is needed on a consistent basis. Vitamin B12 alone is not enough because the body is unable to absorb it easily. In order for the body to absorb vitamin B12 the stomach produces intrinsic factor. Intrinsic factor is a glycoprotein secreted by the cells of the gastric mucosa which enables more of the vitamin B12 to be absorbed. Vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal foods such as liver, eggs, fish and meat. The body also has the ability to recycle vitamin B12 which helps to reduce a vitamin B12 deficiency.
It’s important to note that strict vegetarians or vegans are more likely to require a good vitamin B12 supplement since they don’t eat any animal products that contain vitamin B12.
The most obvious symptom of anemia is the lack of vitamin B12, and its ability to help make healthy red blood cells. Another cause of anemia may be that the body isn’t creating enough intrinsic factor helping the body to absorb vitamin B12. People 50 and over are at a greater risk of suffering from anemia because the body tends to produce less intrinsic factor resulting in less of the vitamin B12 to be absorbed. Children as well as pregnant women are also at risk of being deprived of the proper amount of Vitamin B12 being absorbed due to poor eating habits along with the fact that the growing child within the woman
is absorbing vitamin B12 in order to develop properly. It is highly recommended that you take a good vitamin supplement should you find yourself in any of these high risk areas, be sure to consult with your Doctor.
It’s been recently reported by the Physicians Desk Reference that liquid vitamins are absorbed into the body at a rate of 85 – 95% as opposed to pill forms which have an absorption rate of only 10 – 20%, so should you decide that a good multivitamin supplement is your answer to a healthier life style, I would recommend that you give the GBG 10 In One Liquid Multi Formula a try.
